Auron the Grey by Susiron Auron the Grey by Susiron
Auron from one of my favorite book series, The Age of Fire-- [link]
If you like dragons at all, please read this series. Not only is it from the POV of dragons-- win right off the bat-- it's also a gorgeously written, but sadly lesser known series.

EDIT: The texture that I used is orange/red and was placed on overlay atop the image, making him appear browner. I am aware that he appears brown in this image, and it is a colour choice for the lighting (blue and purple were also used for the shadows to spice up the colours). Auron is still grey in the book, however, leading to the image title.

Auron, The Age of Fire belong to E.E. Knight.
Art by me.
Drawn on SAI.

Lovely~ I always enjoy finding artwork of this series. I know he looks brown here, but it didn't it mention at some point that he could change the color of his hide?

Sameeee
Yes ahahahaha
I was aiming for a warm gray, but the textures I use are orange and yellow so it unintentionally wound up more brown than grey-- but Auron can change the colour of his skin when he stays in one place for a long time. He's turned white in the snow before, and would turn the colour of the ocean when hunting at sea

Yeees. So maybe he's been slinking along some very brown rocks or dirt. :D

His color changing ability always interested me though and I wonder if the skin of other dragons changes as well, but maybe you just can't see it because of their scales?

Ok so....

Not only did you create beautiful art...

But you made beautiful art based on my favorite series, and on my favorite dragon in said series....

You have made me among the happiest mortals on Mundus.

Bless your souls for such grandeur. Bless it!!!

Love the soft personality in his face. One question though: do you know he has red eyes?

I don't really recall it ever being mentioned that he has red eyes? I haven't read the books in quite some time, however, so this was mainly done based on memory and referencing the novel's cover

It actually wasn't mentioned until very late into the first book. Easy to read over I suppose.

Fun fact: E.E. Knight isn't a big fan of the covers for the Age of Fire. Says they're not very accurate.

Hrmmm interesting I'll have to look for that tidbit the next time I reread the novel

That wouldn't surprise me, ahahahah. I imagine that, unless he draws for himself, it's quite difficult to get an artist to draw the dragons like his visions them unless he sits down with them and describes everything bit by bit.
I like the cover art quite a bit, but I also have a lot of pet peeves with them as well. In particular, I hate how the wings and hind legs are done, and the tails seem a bit too long. So if I dislike a handful of things on the cover dragon art, I can imagine that he likely has many qualms with them. After all, these are his brain children.

when i first saw this image, i was like, "wait, where are his wings?" but then i realized, this is Auron, not AuRon.

Exactly. Wistala's tail on the cover of Dragon Avenger is more like an overgrown vine.

Mhmmmm. I don't think that the artist really cared to make the dragons look functional and went more for show ahahahaha

I think this is my favourite depiction of Auron so far, especially since you based it more off the description rather than the book cover <3

That would be due to my texture layer which is orange/red ahahha
I've been trying to avoid desaturated colours at that, so I chose to go with warmer lighting

I still need to read the last one, myself x')

My texture layer is orange/red for warmer lighting. The title is to reflect his character more than the specific image.

We're in the same boat then with knowing the ending =D

I wonder if you could change it in photoshop in the color adjustment section. Really hope you will do the Crimson one, and Wistala. =)

Ahhahha x)
Nawww, I'm not really interested in doing that, tbh. I already did dull it a bit, but I already flattened the image so doing so desaturates my lines and his eyes as much as it does his skin. I'm not really bothered that he looks brown; I've been trying to use more saturated colours and I didn't like how the image looked as much before putting the texture layer on, so I'm pretty content with the colour change.
I'm hoping to as well once I reread the books C:

May I attempt making one for him?
I think in my current state at digital drawing/painting,that might be just the right practice for me,given that this as well should be a thing Id just be able to manage without totally messing it up.
Of course if I did that,Id send you the image so you could decide whatever youd want to do with it,wether dump it or actually using it.
If you think its worth a try,it would of course be helpful if you set a general theme to it for me so I could try make something you like for that creetcha.
Pleeeze, will you at least consider it?

Well, yeah,I understand that and youre right about it.
But:That wasnt meant as an offer, more like a request..and I didnt actually mean to be making an "official" background for him,I thought of that more like an experimental, alternate Version, something like that.
But again,I totally understand your decision and am with you on that, only wanted to point out that Im not as haughty to say I could do THE background for one your artworks,I know Im not that good yet :)
