Kelpies by Susiron Kelpies by Susiron
Yet another species from my story, kelpies.
Kelpies are considered the equine Mythic. They follow under centaurs and commonly live in the open plains of the Satio province, as well as the marshes and woods that surround the Tumult.

Like many Mythics, kelpies are very social creatures. They live in large, close-knit herds, working together to support one another. They are an omnivorous species and will eat everything from dry grasses to meat, although their stomachs digest meat more efficiently. Their main source of prey, depending on where the herd lives, can range from bullfrogs and birds to deer and smaller bovines. Kelpies are also known to kill and eat humans, although do not do so as often in recent years.

What makes kelpies efficient hunters comes from their voices. They are smart creatures, able to memorize and mimic diverse calls from many creatures. They have even been known to mimic screams of distress from human women and children to lure people close. In the marshes, kelpies have little trouble with camouflage, making their traps all the more easy to execute. As for kelpies that live out on the plains, they rely more heavily on their agile legs to get their target once it's in sight. Sharp fangs protruding from their long jaws make snagging prey fairly easy.

Kelpies are smaller than the average horse with long tails that are covered with strands of hair also found on the ankles of both genders. Females will often have longer hairs on their tails, but do not possess fringes on their chins that the males do. In addition, males sport a blunt, horn-like crest on their forehead and may often have smaller horns peppering their nose and cheeks around the protrusion. Smaller and lacking this crest, females tend to have colourful facial markings in place of horns. Without the added weight on their jaw, females are also more efficient at both mimicking calls and hunting, although males are larger and stronger.

Specific kelpie design, "Guilt" belong to me.

Yayay! I love Kelpies, they are so cool. I like how you transformed the myth into a species. I know in the myth that Kelpies can shapeshift to lure prey, but I like your idea of camouflage better :D

Thought it would be fun to take their shapeshifting powers and limit it to the voice eheehee
